Friday DSBN Academy roundup

Lots of articles from the past week and a bit to aggregate on the District School Board of Niagara's school for at-risk students. Most if not all of it coming out of the St. Catharines Standard.
The Standard should be applauded for its continuing coverage on this. As the editorial points out, it broke the story on the academy before the meeting where it was first approved. It's followed up with all the initial reaction and the reconsideration. Showing attending the meetings is mandatory, but not the be-all-end-all of education coverage through its other coverage.
I do hope they sustain it as registration begins and the school opens in the fall.

There's a good piece on this in today's Globe & Mail. With information about the California school this is modeled on. Actually it is a more reasonable analysis than most of the hysteria I've seen on the topic.

I don't believe that any one or any government should be telling this community what they can and can not do. Let it happen. The board is accountable to the community and will stand either in support, if the school is a success, or in shame, if it's not.

I give them kudos for trying to do something different - even if they botched the way they introduced this to the public at large.

Look at what's happened in B.C. with Cristy Clark's election yesterday. She's opening the flood gates on parental choice, looking ahead and not back for more ways to better educate parents to make the choices they think will get their child the best education possible.

Can we hope for the same from an Ontario government in the future?

To your last question, I don't see it, at least not with the parties and people in play right now.
